  • ·         Ride the Polar Express: All aboard the Cape Train as you head to Christmas Town where Santa and his elves hop on the train to hand out presents! During the ride, you’ll also be served some hot chocolate and cookies. Get in on the fun by wearing your pajamas, ugly sweaters, or holiday-themed outfits.
  • ·         Go sledding: Bring a sled and hit the slopes for some sledding around Cape Cod! Check out these top 10 spots for a great ride!
  • ·         Shopping: Get some unique holiday gifts as you shop in Hyannis or any of our surrounding towns over the holiday season.
  • ·         Visit the museums: Cape Code is home to some fantastic museums like the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, the Cape Cod Highland Lighthouse & Museum, or the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, and they’re ready for you to explore over the holiday season!
  • ·         Talk a walk along the beach: OK, so you might not need your swimsuit but you can still enjoy a walk along the beach or catch a beautiful sunset with your special someone.
  • ·         Warm up: Get some delicious and hot clam chowder from Hyannis’ Black Cat Tavern! Or you could opt with their lobster bisque, pan seared crab cakes, fried calamari, or really anything off their menu for a great feast!

Cape Cod is a wonderful place to spend the holiday season but it’s also a great destination to gift to someone on your holiday list! Give the gift of travel this year with a gift certificate to Hyannis Holiday Motel so your friends and family can experience a Cape Cod getaway!

Fall in love with Cape Cod in the fall

by Hyannis Holiday 11. October 2017 22:52

Though summer is prime time to visit Cape Cod, the fall and winter does offer wonderful events, things to do, and of course fantastic dining! Enjoy Cape Cod without the crowds and yet the same fun you’d have in the summer.

Fall is of course known for delightful festivals, both indoors and out, and the Fall for the Arts Festival, Oct. 1 – Oct. 31, offers free fun for the whole family! Visit art galleries, museums, theaters, and children’s activities! The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod also hosts a Winter Art Exhibit from January through February.

It’s not fall without pumpkins and October is a wonderful time to pick your own pumpkin at Coonamessett Farm in East Falmouth! Pick your pumpkin, take a hayride, and pick up some warm alpaca gloves in the shop during their October at the Farm event!

Enjoy a breath of fresh air, or several, during the Cape Cod Marathon Weekend over in Falmouth! The marathon is on Sunday, October 29 with the half-marathon on Saturday. Many run this race as it’s a Boston Qualifier – and can you really think of anywhere better to run than in Cape Cod?

If you want a little more speed with your fall activity, there’s still plenty of time to make use of our dedicated bike paths, scenic byways, or riding our mountain biking trails. One of the most popular biking trails is the Cape Cod Rail Trail, a 25-mile paved pathway from South Dennis to Wellfleet.

With the changing season comes the changing visitors of the flying type: Our migratory birds! Visit the Mass Audubon Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary in Barnstable to see the birds in their natural habitat and learn more about the protected species. Another option for wildlife viewing is to see the whales on a Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruise before the season ends in October!

We’ll still have sunny days in the fall, perfect for those who want to walk along the beach or take stunning photos of it without having to strategically get groups of people out of the photos.

If you’re looking for indoor fun in Cape Cod, head to one of our many museums to see unique exhibits and collections. Some of our favorites include the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, the Cape Cod Maritime Museum, and the Sandwich Glass Museum.

There’s nothing quite like comfort food in the fall and Hyannis is home to some wonderful restaurants serving up hot dishes full of flavor! We always recommend stopping at Black Cat Tavern, Baxter’s Boathouse, Alberto’s Ristorante, and the Roadhouse Café during a stay in Hyannis. Whether you want to savor the lobster bisque or fried calamari at Black Cat Tavern or indulge in the shrimp and scallops orvietto or lobster ravioli at Alberto’s Ristorante, you’ll be in for a real treat at any of our local restaurants!

1. Cape Cod is a top destination

Cape Cod is a golfer’s paradise within your favorite vacation destination! It’s easy to schedule a tee time at the many courses on our coast to add some outdoor recreation to your travel plans.

2. Year-round play

With more than 25 public courses and 15 private golf course clubs, you’ve got options for what green you want to play and the best part is that most of these courses are open year-round! With our mild climate, you can practically play golf all 52 weeks of the year here.

3. Variety of challenging play

With so many courses to play, that also means there’s tons of variety in challenge. We have fun 9-hole courses, championship 18-holes course, and a mix of everything in-between. Some of our courses are perfect for Cape Cod-bound history buffs as a few date back to the 1890s! Many of our courses are par-54 or par-72.

Of course, there’s also a few miniature golf courses if the little ones aren’t ready for big putters or bigger courses or if you need to warm up with a par-36 course first!

4. It’s where the pros play

Did you know former PGA Tour player Paul Harney moved his family to Cape Cod in the ‘60s to build the Paul Harney Golf Course? Other PGA notables who have played our green include Jim Hallet, Jason Caron, and Jeff Lewis as well as Sally Quinlan and Carri Wood from the LPGA Tour.

Explore the great golf courses right here in Hyannis or in the surrounding towns that make up Cape Cod to find the right one for your next getaway!

1.      Spend the day at the beach: With 40 miles of protected seashore at the Cape Cod National Seashore, you’ll be able to find a stretch of sand for a fun day of relaxing at the beach. Or, you can explore the walking and biking trails or visit the lighthouses.

Open daily from mid-April to early October, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., you can explore the beautiful blooms in the gardens, take the little ones to Hidden Hollow or the Adventure Park, as well as check out the art galleries and installations.

4.      See the whales: Climb aboard the boat for a trip with Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises! Tours can last up to four hours as you circle the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary to feed in the warmer months. Staff is on-hand to help identify the whales you’re seeing and provide tips for a better whale watching experience. Departures can begin as early as 8 a.m. and as late as 4 p.m. during the season.

5.      Sip a brew at Cape Cod Beer: Take a tour of the brewery and enjoy a tasting at Cape Cod Beer. Tastings are $5 for five samples (3 oz. pours) and you can keep the souvenir tasting glass! You can opt for a self-guided tour or take a guided version at 11 a.m., Monday through Saturday.

6.      Ride the rails: All aboard the Cape Train on the Cape Cod Central Railroad! Take a scenic ride from Hyannis through West Barnstable and Sandwich to see sights you can only see by train. Try one of the specialty rides for brunch, lunch, dinner, or the Rails & Ales Beer Tasting Train!

7.      Sample fine wine: Visit Truro Vineyards of Cape Cod for a free tour at 1 or 3 p.m. and stay for a tasting that’s just $10 for five pours and a souvenir glass. Perfect for summer, try the rosé, riesling, or sauvignon blanc if available.

8.      Catch a show: See a performance at The Cape Playhouse in Dennis for the perfect end to a day in Cape Cod. World-class talent has been drawn to the theater for more than 90 years and each summer season brings a mix of musicals and premieres to the stage.

9.      Enjoy a lobster roll: We recommend stopping by The Black Cat Tavern, right in Hyannis, for an amazing lobster roll (a real classic dish in Cape Cod) for a filling lunch or dinner.

10. Cool off with some ice cream: Visit the Cape Cod Creamery for a cool treat this summer! The ice cream shop has tons of unique flavors that are named after towns and regions in Cape Cod – so perhaps you should try the Hyannis Heath Bar during a stay with us? Though we understand if you’re tempted by the Iyannough Cookie Dough or Orleans Oreo.

There are plenty more adventures waiting in Cape Cod and Hyannis and we invite you to come discover why Cape Cod is the perfect vacation destination this summer. If you’re looking for affordable accommodations for your getaway, check out our guest rooms at Hyannis Holiday Motel!
